John Freely

John Freely (d. 1926 –ö. 20 Nisan 2017[1]), Amerikalı ünlü bir fizikçi, tarihçi, öğretmen ve yazardır. İstanbul, Atina, Venedik, Türkiye, Yunanistan ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ile alakalı yazdığı seyahat ve tarih kitaplarıyla bilinir. Türkçe-İngilizce edebiyat çevirmeni Maureen Freely'nin babasıdır[2]

Yaşamı

Brooklyn, New York'ta doğdu ve İrlanda'da büyüdü. Liseyi bitirip II. Dünya Savaşı'nın son iki yılı için 17 yaşındayken ABD Donanmasına katılarak Burma ve Çin'de bir Amerikan komando birliğinde görev yaptı. Lisans eğitimini, New York New Rochelle'deki Iona Koleji (New York) ve geleneksel Amerikan Katolik koleji G.I. Bill'de tamamladı.

Akademik kariyeri

Doktora derecesini New York Üniversitesi'nde fizikte serbestçe almış ve daha sonra Oxford Üniversitesi'nde Ortaçağ Avrupa bilim tarihinin öncü araştırmacısı Alistair Cameron Crombie tarafından doktora sonrası çalışmalarını sürdürmüştür. Crombie'den miras aldığı ana fikir, "Batı Avrupa biliminin Karanlık Çağlardan Kopernik, Galileo ve Newton'a kadar sürekliliği" idi. Doktora sonrası çalışmalarını İstanbul'da Boğaziçi Üniversitesi'nde "Doğu ve Batı'nın Modern Biliminin Ortaya Çıkışı" dersi de dahil olmak üzere, tarih ve astronomi dersleri verdi.[3]

1960'tan bu yana New York City, Boston, Londra, Atina, Oxford ve Venedik'te yaşamakla birlikte İstanbul'daki Boğaziçi Üniversitesi'nde (eski Robert Kolejinde) fizik ve bilim tarihini öğretti. 1993'te Boğaziçi Üniversitesi'ne döndü.

Ölümü

40'tan fazla seyahat ve tarih konulu kitabın yazarı olan ünlü Amerikalı yazar, fizikçi, tarihçi ve eğitimci 20 Nisan 2017'de 90 yaşında ölmüştür.
