Willard Van Orman Quine

Willard Van Orman Quine (25 Haziran 1908 - 25 Aralık 2000), Mantığın temelleri ve özellikle de semantik yönleriyle ilgili bir kuram geliştirmiş olan Amerikalı çağdaş mantıkçı ve filozof. Genelde Russell ve Whitehead tarafından geliştirilmiş olan matematiksel mantığa sadık kalmış olan Quine, İngiliz filozoflarının mantığın ontolojik olarak nötr olduğu genel görüşüne karşıt bir tavırla, bir mantık kuramının kabulünün ortaya çıkardığı ontolojik sonuçları dile getirmeye çalışmıştır. Düzeltilemez olan analitik önermelerle, deney sonucu düzeltilebilir sentetik önermeler arasında temelli bir ayrım bulunduğu teziyle, anlamlı her önermenin, doğrudan ve aracısız deneylerden hareketle oluşturulmuş bir yapım olduğu görüşüne şiddetle karşı çıkan Quine, Duhem'i izleyerek, bilim adamının deneyin sınamasına, yalıtlanmış bir önermeyi değil de, bir dizi önermeyi tabi tuttuğunu öne sürmüştür. Onun görüşüne göre, bir önerme yalnızca "deneylerin yalın bir özeti" değil, fakat bilimsel bir sistemin bir bileşenidir.
