Northwood, Middlesex'te doğdu. Dorset'teki Canford School'da ve King's College London'da okudu. 1963'ten itibaren 4 yıl Slade School of Art, University College London'a devam etti. Ayrıca Londra'da Butler's Wharf'ta stüdyosu vardı ve 1970'lerde merkezinde heykeltıraş ve performans sanatçısı Andrew Logan'ın olduğu sosyal çevrenin bir parçasıydı.

Önceleri deneysel kısa filmler çekti. 1970'te Ken Russell'ın The Devils filminde yapım tasarımcılığı yapmasıyla film endüstrisinde tanındı. İlk filmi, peyce ses getiren ve kimilerince gey cinselliğini olumlu yansıtan ilk film sayılan Sebastiane 'dır. (1976)

Bu filmi ilk baş yapıtı sayılan Jubilee izledi. 1977'de çekilen ve bir yıl sonra gösterime giren filmde Kraliçe I. Elizabeth zamanda yolculuk yaparak 20. yüzyılda adaşı tarafından yönetilen ıssız ve vahşi boş bir araziye gelir. Jubilee, Birleşik Krallık'ta çekilen ilk punk film sayılır ve Wayne County & the Electric Chairs'ten Wayne County, Jordan, Toyah Willcox ve Adam and the Ants gibi punk gruplar ve figürleri barındırır.

1980'lerde Jarman, Büyük Britanya'da gey olduğunu saklamayan az sayıda ünlü insandan biriydi; gey-karşıtı mevzuata karşı ve AIDS'e dikkat çekme amaçlı yapılan kampanyaların liderlerindendi.

1986'da The Garden filminin çekimleri sırasında Jarman'a AIDS teşhisi konuldu ve daha sonra bu durumu kamuoyuyla paylaştı. Filmi tamamlayabildiyse de, bir daha hiç bu ayarda film yapmayı denemedi. Hastalığı nedeniyle Prospect Cottage, Dungeness, Kent'e taşındı.

Blue filminin çekimleri sırasında artık kör almuştu ve AIDS'ten ölmek üzereydi. Sinemacı olarak vasiyeti, ölümünden sonra BBC2'de yayınlanan Glitterbug idi.

1994'te öldü. Cenazesi Old Romney Church, Kent'te defnedildi. Chumbawamba, anısına Song for Derek Jarman 'ı, Andi Sexgang ise Last of England adlı albümü yaptı.
