Futuyma, lisans derecesini Cornell Üniversitesi'nden, yüksek lisans ve doktora derecesini ise Michigan Üniversitesi'nden aldı. Çalışmalarının ana konusu bitki yiyen böcekler ile bu böceklerin yediği bitkiler arasındaki etkileşimdir. New York Eyalet Üniversitesi'nin Stony Brook kampüsünde ekoloji ve evrim profesörüdür.

Futuyma, bütün dünyada ders kitabı olarak okutulan Evrimsel Biyoloji (Evolutionary Biology) ve Science on Trial: The Case for Evolution kitaplarının yazarıdır. Son kitabı olan ve lisans öğrencileri için bir kaynak niteliğindeki Evolution 2005 yılında yayınlanmış ve 2008 yılında Evrim adıyla Türkçeye çevrilmiştir. Futuyma, ayrıca M. Slatkin ile birlikte Coevolution'ı yazmıştır.

Futuyma, Evrim Çalışma Derneği'nin ve Amerikalı Doğa Bilimcileri Derneği'nin başkanlığını ve Evolution ve Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics dergilerinin editörlüğünü yapmıştır.

Amerikalı Doğa Bilimcileri Derneği tarafından Sewall Wright Ödülü ile ödüllendirilen Futuyma, Guggenheim Bursu ile Fulbright Bursu almıştır. 25 Nisan 2006'da Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Ulusal Bilimler Akademisi'ne üye olarak seçilmiştir.

Evrim konusunda ses getiren çalışmalarının yanı sıra önemli bir arazi biyoloğudur.
