En İyi Görsel Efekt Akademi Ödülü

1939'da ilk kez verilmeye başlandığında bu kategori En İyi Özel Efekt olarak anılmaktaydı. 1963'te bu kategori En İyi Görsel Efekt ve En İyi Ses Efekti olarak ikiye ayrıldı. 1972'de Akademi 'Görsel Efekt' dalında Oscar vermeyi bırakıp yerine Akademi Özel Ödülü vermeye başladı. Bu sadece birkaç yıl sürdü ve bu kategori de Akademi'nin yıllık olarak dağıttığı bir ödül haline geldi. 1996'da kategori tekrar değişerek sadece En İyi Görsel Efekt oldu. 2007'de daha geniş bir aralığı kapsayabilmek için bu kategoride 15 filmin seçilmesine, daha sonra bunun 7'ye düşürülüp ve en son üç aday arasından oylanmasına karar verildi.
